The PPED offers stricto sensu courses, in Master’s and Doctorate levels, in the field of public policies, institutions, strategies, sustainability, intellectual property and development, aiming to improve the scientific and professional competence of its student body, providing an active participation in the theoretical and applied debate about the main themes referring to the Program’s focus areas.

The Academic Master’s is destined to qualify professionals from the most varied disciplinary backgrounds, for the formulation, selection and monitoring of development policies and projects – in summary, actors with capacity for social intervention. The professional to be qualified by the Master’s course will have the Master’s degree in Public Policies, Strategies and Development.

The PPED Doctorate program is destined to students with Master’s degree, obtained in an institution accredited by the Ministry of Education. It has as a goal to produce an original reflection and a transformative action by professional of the most different origins – professors and researchers, political leaders and government leaders, public managers, members of non-governmental organizations – which are face with the challenges of interpreting, generating knowledge and training themselves for strategic decisive processes, and that are able to, in the terms of ideas or political action, contribute for the implementation of development programs and projects. The Doctorate is also destined to those who intend to dedicate themselves to teaching and research in the fields of knowledge of focus areas of the Program. The professionalwith a Doctorate education will have the Doctor’s degree in Public Policies, Strategies and Development.

The Program began its activities in March, 2008, and has as a goal to offer strict sensu courses in the field of public policies, institutions, strategies, sustainability, intellectual property and development, in the theoretical and applied plans.
It aims to widen the dialogue between the education and the research committed to reflections around the key-ideas of innovation, development strategies and institutional change, around which its four focus areas are organized, namely:

1) GPP - Governança e Políticas Públicas (Governance and Public Policies)
2) IED - Instituições, Estratégias e Desenvolvimento (Institutions, Strategies and Development)
3) IPID - Inovação, Propriedade Intelectual e Desenvolvimento (Innovation, Intellectual Property and Development, in association with Fiocruz)
4) EDS – Estratégias, Desenvolvimento e Sustentabilidade (Strategies, Development and Sustainability

With a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional character, PPED is the result of the desire and the commitment of a group of professors from different academic backgrounds, aggregating a combination of expertise in the fields of Political Science, Economy, Law, Biology, History and Geography, aiming to climb over the walls of compartmented knowledge and foster the wide circulation of ideas, students and professors.

On 11/19/2008, the CNPq President informed the approval of the National Institute for Science and Technology in Public Policies, Strategies and Development (INCT/PPED), which gathers, in addition to PPED, the Institute of Human Sciences and Philosophy from UFF (ICHF/UFF), the Graduate program in Developing Social Sciences, Agriculture and Society (CPDA/UFRRJ), the Institute of Social and Political Studies from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (IESP/UERJ), the Institute of Economics (IE) and the Institute of Geosciences (IGE) from UNICAMP, and the Institute of Human Sciences from UFJF (ICH/UFJF).
