OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

The International Political Economy Program (PEPI) has the objective of providing stricto sensu academic background to researches and professors. From a methodology that emphasizes the historic comprehension of the operation of the contemporary interstate system, PEPI academic efforts point to the study of the relations between the flows of capital, industry, technology, natural resources, territory, war and diplomacy, organically articulating History, Economic Science, Geopolitics, and International Relations studies. PEPI-IE-UFRJ congregates Doctored professors with studies in several fields, but interdisciplinaryly articulated in the group effort for the production of analysis and interpretations that encompass several dimensions of the International Political Economy. PEPI is a program ruled by CAPES International Relations area.

History of the Interstate Systems
This research line has the objective of encompassing the studies that have the history of interstate conflicts and the atual dynamics of the interstate relations as theme, analyzing from a historical perspective. The studies encompassed by this research line search, in a broad perspective, the intersection between the economic power, the political power and the military power as key elements in the establishment of the interstate hierarchies in Time. Methodologically, it searches to develop a critical and interdisciplinary dialogue between academic production in the fields of Economic History, History of International Relations and Political History, on one side, and the theoretical production in the field of International Political Economy, on the other. In this research line, analysis on the interstate conflict in the scope of a capitalist worldwide system which privilege the political and economic transformations as of the second half of the century XIX is highlighted, with the industrialization between the central capitalist economies, the international financing system, the democracy of masses, the imperialism and the technological and industrial war.

Strategy and Development

This research line encompasses studies that have the general theme of relation between the processes and projects for economic development, and the competitive challenges in the military, political and economic fields faced in the international scope by capitalist States. The studies in this line explore the relation between the strong economic development presented by some contemporary societies and the existence of great competitive external challenges to some societies, responsible for the existence of a defensive and permanent strategical orientation of the States which almost always involves political and military dimensions and fierce competition for the control of “sensible technologies”. It also aims to encompass reflection on the relation between military industry, on one side, and the economic development and international power, on the other. It proposes to generate studies that are different from the conventional debate on the economic development, searching interfaces with power struggle and by the interstate power.

Global Power and Geopolitics of Capitalism

This research line encompasses studies that aim to develop a theoretical interpretation of the Capitalist Interstate System “long term” way. The studies in this line suggest the existence of moments of “expansive explosions”, marked by an increase in “competitive pressure” between the “powers” that made up the system and, indeed, by an enlargement of the internal and external borders. Suggesting the political power operates as flow, its maintenance would require incessant exercise. In this sense, the exercises of theoretical interpretation made by the studies in this line assume the idea that the power exerces a “competitive pressure” over itself, and there is no social relation prior to the power itself. The concept of global power, which is the cornerstone for the studies in this line, privileges the movement, the conflict and the contradictions that move the system, making some kind of “perpetual peace” or “stable governance” logically impossible, exactly because it conceives the capitalist interstate system as a universe in permanent expansion.

ACADEMIC STRUCTURE AND REGIMEN

PEPI offers solid formation for master and doctor’s degree, aiming to multiply the number of researchers and professors able to broaden the scope of the analysis about the Brazilian theoretical reflection over political economy of the international system.

The expected duration for the Master’s degree is two years and the time scheduled for pedagogical activities is equal to 360 (three hundred and sixty) hours-class plus 30 (thirty) hours-class for Seminar of Master’s dissertation. For doctorate, the expectation is that the course is concluded in four academic years, complying a scheduled time of pedagogical activities equal to 600 (six hundred) hours-class plus 30 (thirty) hours-class for Seminar of Thesis for Doctor’s degree.

The Master and Doctor’s degree also provisions the presentation of the project and qualification, respectively. The final requirement for the obtainment of the Master and Doctor’s degree is the approval of the dissertation or thesis, in public and by a specialized examining board.

SUBJECTS OFFERED

PEPI is the only post-graduation program in International Political Economy in Brazil. Its pioneering requires and allows certain level of experimentation in the construction of the program of the mandatory and elective subjects. The academic concept is supported by an indissociable tripod made of History, Politics and Economy. In every subject and in the research activities, we work with theoretical and historical information considered essential for an international political and economic analysis that is at the same time systemic, dialectical and strategical.

PEPI assures solid theoretical formation by offering a central academic core made of a block with six mandatory subjects:

History II: history of the projections of the interstate power after 1860

At the same time, a wide group of elective subjects related to the themes of the Research Lines is offered, which may be freely combined by the students, according to their academic advisor.In order to complete the curriculum requirements, the student shall choose 3 (three) for the Master’s degree and 4 (four) for the Doctor’s degree.

ADMISSIONS

Admissions to the PEPI Master's and Doctorate Programs

Admission to the Master's and Doctorate Programs for Foreign Candidates, Residents and Non-Residents in Brazil takes place once a year, usually in the second semester. Admission requirements and application rules are published in a public notice (only in Portuguese) made avalaible on our website (https://www.ie.ufrj.br/pos-graduacao-j/pos-graduacao-em-economia-politica-internacional/selecao.html ) every year, between July-August.

For foreign non resident applicants, admission requirements include the assessment of a research proposal and the candidate's curriculum vitae - according to the models and weights reffered to in the call for applications.

For Brazilians and foreign residents, the admission process requires the candidate to pass three exams: (1) specific knowledge (based on a basic bibliography pointed out in the call for applications), (2) foreign language (English), (3) assessment of a research proposal and the candidate's curriculum analisis - according to the models and weights reffered to in the call for applications.

PEPI academic staff is composed by Doctored professors who, with their broad and diverse teaching experience, have contributed to the development of internal discussions and to the orientation of master and doctor’s degree students. All of them hold the highest academic level of study with permanent exercise of research and teaching in the fields of History, Economy and Politics.

Along with each research line, research projects are developed under responsibility of at least one PEPI professor.
