CALL FOR PAPERS

 3rd Agent-Based Macroeconomics Workshop (ABMW)
Policy and finance for sustainable and inclusive growth
20th February 2026
Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

LINK FOR SUBMISSIONS

The third edition of the Agent-Based Macroeconomics Workshop brings together researchers to explore pressing topics at the intersection of economic growth, inequality, green re-industrialization, AI innovation, sustainable finance, and climate change. Taking the approach of modeling the economy as an Evolving Complex System, this edition of the workshop is dedicated to advancing our understanding which policy combinations and finance architectures can foster sustainable and inclusive growth during the twin (green and digital) transitions.

The event welcomes both applied and theoretical research. It will address both global and Brazilian challenges, such as supporting innovation, reducing income and wealth inequality, promoting sustainable economic growth, improving economic stability, and accelerating the transition to a sustainable economy, by means of a combination of rigorous academic studies and practical policy insights.

WORKSHOP THEMES

The workshop welcomes contributions that address the following key themes:
– Endogenous growth
– Business and financial cycles
– Innovation, technological and structural change
– Climate and economic coevolution
– Modeling economic and ecological sustainability
– Labor market dynamics
– Fiscal and monetary policies
– Industrial and innovation policies
– Green finance fostering the transition to a low-carbon economy
– Climate change mitigation and adaptation policies

SUMMER

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
7th Agent-Based Macroeconomics Summer School (ABaMSS)
19th – 25th February 2026
Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)

LINK FOR APPLICATIONS

The summer school aims to provide an overview of Agent-Based Macroeconomics (ABM) from both theoretical and applied perspectives. It starts motivating the utilization of a complexity approach to macroeconomics, rooted in models with heterogeneous, interacting agents. It then extensively presents the Agent-Based Computational Economics approach, elucidating various macroeconomic models accounting for endogenous growth, business cycles, crises, development, and climate economic coevolution. The presentation of the models includes potential applications to economic policy issues such as fiscal, monetary, innovation, industrial, labor, and climate-change interventions.
Participants will also take part in hands-on ABM implementation labs, gaining exposure to a wide array of techniques, from foundational to cutting-edge methodologies. Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to attend the 3rd Agent-Based Macroeconomics Workshop and are invited to submit their research papers for presentation during the event.

APPLICATION
Apply to the Summer School by filling in the Application Form by clicking here or by copying and pasting https://tinyurl.com/abamss26 in your web browser, where you must upload a short CV and a letter of motivation (no longer than 500 words). A recommendation letter is welcome but not mandatory for the application. Postdoctoral researchers, Ph.D. and master’s students are particularly welcome. The summer school language is English. Participation is free of charge.
We are finalizing arrangements to support accommodation and travel expenses for students coming from outside of Rio de Janeiro. The confirmation of support will come no later than 30/11/2026.

China and the changing geopolitics of global communication: BRICS and beyond

Daya Thussu
Professor of International Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University
President, IAMCR (International Association for Media and Communication Research)

ABSTRACT
The US-led Western nations and corporations have traditionally defined key conceptions of geopolitics and how it is communicated globally, given their domination of the hard and software of international media and communication systems. However, in recent decades, this is being challenged by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries, notably China and Russia, and, to a lesser extent, by India. Such countries are developing competing narratives on global affairs including on debates surrounding a ‘democratic’ vs. an ‘authoritarian’ version of AI. Such contestations are beginning to undermine Western positions at a time when the West appears to be in decline. This talk, based on the speaker’s new book Changing Geopolitics of Global Communication analyses these changes within domains of digital infrastructure, commerce, and digital for development, supported by recent examples, to underscore the growing importance of communication in international relations.

BIO-NOTE

Daya Thussu is Professor of International Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University. He is the President of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR). He was, for many years, Professor of International Communication at the University of Westminster in London.
