OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW
The Institute of Economics is the academic unity at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro responsible for teaching, research and advanced studies in the field of Economics. The Economics Program (PPGE) of graduate studies in Economics is one of the three graduate programs offered by the IE-UFRJ.
The Economics Program has over 30 years of tradition in teaching graduate-level Economics. The master course has been launched in 1979, while the Doctorate programs has started in 1987. More than four hundred Master’s dissertations and two hundred Doctorate theses have been concluded since the PPGE was created, several of them having being awarded by different academic and non-academic institutions in Brazil. The PPGE is a consolidated graduate program and one of the most important in the field of Economics in Brazil.
One of the main characteristics of the PPGE is the critical and pluralist vocation, which is reflected in the wide range of theoretical affiliations of its professors. Different theoretical orientations live together, covering from a mainstream view in Economics to a varied range of heterodox approaches. As a matter of fact, the PPGE is a reference center in education and research based on the heterodox thought in Economics.
The PPGE aims to educate economists with a critical thinking. For such, the program seeks to provide their students with a solid theoretical background, concerned with presenting the different theoretical approaches in Economics. It also provides them a solid training both in historical and comparative analysis and in the use of modern quantitative methods in Economics.
RESEARCH AREAS
RESEARCH AREAS
Since its foundation, the PPGE research activities have focused on the analysis of the processes behind social and economic development. Initially, the focus of the program was aimed at the focus area of industrial organization and technology economics. Progressively, the program has evolved into its current structure, with three concentration areas:
Industry and Innovation
Macroeconomics and Monetary Economics
Economic and Social Development
ACADEMIC STAFF
ACADEMIC STAFF
The PPGE has a highly qualified faculty, with a varied education in terms of theoretical orientation and knowledge areas. Our professors come from renowned Brazilian and foreign universities. As a consequence, the teaching and research activities of PPGE present a large diversity and density in its three focus areas, what enables the development of master dissertations and doctorate thesis in a wide and varied set of subjects. Diversity within faculty experiences also contribute to the emergence of an open work environment.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The PPGE sets slightly different admission criteria for resident and non-resident applicants (either Brazilian or foreigners).
For all applicants, the minimum graduate admission requirement to the Master’s program is a bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution, whereas the basic requirement to enter the Doctorate program is a Master’s degree.
Admission requirements for RESIDENT students
All students (either Brazilian or foreigners) who qualify as resident in Brazil and who are willing to apply for admission to the Master’s program must take the ANPEC National Exam (ANPEC - Brazilian Association of Graduate Program in Economics) and must have obtained a compatible score, which varies from one year to another. Please check the ANPEC website for more information on the Exam.
Admission requirements to the PPGE Doctorate program include three entrance exams in the field of economics (Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Brazil’s Economy); English Proficiency exam or evidence of English language proficiency; analysis of applicant’s candidacy dossier, which includes applicant's academic records, letters of recommendation, and doctoral research proposal; and also an interview with a board of professors.
Direct progression from the Master’s to the Doctorate program (without passing the Master’s dissertation examination) is allowed only for the PPGE students with an outstanding academic performance and maturity to draw up a Doctorate thesis.
Admission requirements for NON-RESIDENT students
For all students (either Brazilian or foreigners) who qualify as non-resident, admission requirements to the Master’s and Doctorate programs are based on the analysis of candidacy dossier including: academic records, certificates and degrees, letters of recommendation, applicant’s CV, research proposal (for Doctorate applicants only), copy of all published works, and others. Applicants are also required to fill up a candidacy form. For more detailed information on the candidacy requirements, please check the information provided in the Call for Applications page.
MASTER'S PROGRAM
The PPGE curricular structure is composed of a preparatory course on mathematics (taken usually on February), three mandatory courses (Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Econometrics), and six elective courses, four of them in the concentration areas.
